Disney builds a single leg jump robot

Disney researchers in Pittsburgh, USA, built a robot with a single leg jump and can now bounce about 19 times without falling. The project started as a computational simulation and the last hardware product. Researchers based on Marc Raibert's frequency hopping controller for the system, which is controlled by parallel or combined LEAP linear actuators. It can jump about seven seconds.


Researchers have found that single-legged hop robots are used for more complex movements on the best test platforms. Robots are useful because, among other advantages, they can overcome uneven terrain and perform complex movements as their behavior. The single leg hop robot has the simplest topology in a leg-like system and is limited to the hopping gait. Not only do single-leap jumping robots provide a simplified test platform for motion control algorithms, they also require high-speed, high-force drives to achieve safe, stable clearances and accept greater mechanical stress on actuators than do multiple leg systems. For these reasons, the single-leg frequency hopping robot provides an ideal reference for an actuator for leg movement.
