GE supplies a LM2500+G4 gas turbine for a multi-purpose maritime patrol ship

Recently, GE Marine Solutions announced that it will supply the LM2500+G4 gas turbine to the Italian Navy's new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d'Altura (PPA) multi-purpose maritime patrol ship. The hybrid electric propulsion system of the PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship will also utilize GE's shock-proof mv3000 drive and GE's designed engine grid as part of the propulsion system. Avio Aero, based in Italy, will assume responsibility for the design of the gas turbine package.

The PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship will be built by Fincantini in its integrated Riva Trigoso and Muggiano shipyards. According to Fincantini, the PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship will serve as a multi-purpose patrol ship with maritime rescue capability to civil defense. The captain is 129 meters long and can carry 90 crew members. It can also provide accommodation for 171 members.
It is reported that the contract undertaken by GE Marine Solutions includes the provision of an LM2500+G4 gas turbine and the provision of six additional LM2500+G4 gas turbines. At low speeds, the PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship's flexible and unique hybrid propulsion unit will use a small gearbox fixed motor, which will be propelled by two diesel engines at medium speed, and with a gas turbine propulsion, the speed will exceed 31 knots. GE Marine Solutions will also be responsible for the integration of electrical systems for hybrid systems.
The MV3000 drive developed by GE Marine Solutions for the PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship will drive the motor to operate the propeller at low speed. Hybrid motors and drives can also be used as generators to power equipment on the ship, such as weapons and sonar. In the event of a disaster relief, the PPA multi-purpose maritime patrol ship was able to provide up to 2 megawatts of power on shore. Because GE's drives can convert a 50 Hz power supply to a 60 Hz power supply, it's easier to connect anywhere on the shore.

CNC Lathe

Operated with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems and provided with precise design instructions, CNC Lathes are machine tools where the material or part is clamped and rotated by the main spindle, while the cutting tool that work on the material, is mounted and moved in various axis.
CNC Lathes are normally used for machining parts, where the material / part is clamped and rotated whereas the cutting tool is stationery mounted for OD (Outer Diameter) and ID (Inner Diameter) operations, e.g. shafts and pipes. They are ideal for parts that have same symmetry around an axis that could be chucked up (i.e. radially clamped) in the spindle.
A simple CNC Lathe operates on 2-axis and the tool is located in a fixed position at 8 to 24 station turret. The rotating action of the part is called [turning", hence certain types of CNC Lathes are called CNC Turning Machines.
Milling (cutting tool moves around stationery workpiece), boring and tapping (a tool that cuts threads inside hole) tools are normally driven by a separate drive system inside the turret. Depending on the application, the life tools (i.e. active tool) are mounted for axial or radial operational directions. These could be found in 3-axis CNC Lathes or CNC Turning Machines.
Lathe machines with additional options such as Y-axis, sub-spindles, or specific selected options for automation are commonly called Turning Centres. These sophisticated machine tools are capable of machining complex parts – these go beyond standard OD & ID turning operations and may incorporate milling, drilling and tapping operations to complete the part in one setting. Taking a piece from raw part to finished product, such all-in-one machine tools significantly improves productivity.
