On June 2, 1983, Air Canada Flight 797, a dc-9 flight from Dallas to Toronto, flew at an altitude of 33,000 feet. The first sign of the accident was black smoke from the rear restroom. Smoke soon began to fill the cabin and the pilot chose to make an emergency landing.

As the smoke was too strong to see the dashboard, the pilots were struggling to land the plane in Cincinnati. However, shortly after the doors and emergency exits were opened, the cabin caught fire before everyone left the plane, killing 23 of the 46 people on board.

After the crash, the FAA forced the installation of smoke detectors and automatic fire-fighting equipment for the aircraft's restrooms. It took five years to refit all aircraft, added a fire-resistant layer to the seats of the passenger cabin, and installed emergency emergency lights on the floor to help passengers quickly find exits in heavy smoke and evacuate in time. Aircraft interiors produced after 1988 use more fire-retardant materials.
