Domestic Automatic Transmission Obtains Key Technology Breakthrough

As one of the most important components of automobiles, automatic transmission has been plaguing the development of independent brand enterprises. In the face of the technical monopoly of foreign companies and the lack of domestic core technologies, domestic enterprises mainly rely on the purchase of mature foreign technologies to realize the production of automatic transmissions. However, recently the reporter learned that some local companies engaged in the development of automotive electronics technology have made breakthroughs in key transmission technologies, and some have already attempted mass production.

The key control technology finally broke through

Haiboruide (Beijing) Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., engaged in the development of automotive electronics core technologies and products, has independently developed a 32-bit automotive electronic control unit development platform. On this platform, a series of products such as the AMT control unit, the hybrid engine-specific engine control unit, and the series hybrid vehicle APU control unit (ACU) have been formed and have applied for a number of national patents. Currently, Hypertherm has signed cooperation agreements with various OEMs for the development of various types of control systems. Some products will begin mass production in 2011.

Cai Zhaohui, general manager of Starford Automotive Electronics (Beijing) Co., Ltd., who is engaged in the R&D and production of AMT control systems, told reporters that Stauff Automotive Electronics has positioned the target market in the field of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, accumulating on the electronically controlled hydraulic automatic transmission technology platform. The software technology base of urban buses, trucks, and cars can be modularly equipped for different types of transmissions.

Cai Chaohui told reporters that the company had started cooperation with Hangzhou Public Transport Group in the first half of 2007 and applied the Starford AMT to the buses for application tests. The test vehicle has so far traveled more than 2 million kilometers. The automatic transmission and control system of Stave achieved a breakthrough in the key technologies of stability and reliability. The current system runs smoothly and stably, and is well received by the Hangzhou Bus Company and the driver.

It is understood that the international commercial vehicle transmission giant ZF only began to enter China's bus transmission support area two years ago. In contrast, the development speed of independent brands is not slow. At present, only self-developed AMT electronic control technology is applied to buses. In terms of industrial application, Starford has accumulated certain experience. This product is applied to domestic transmissions and has the initiative in cost control and strong market competitiveness. Some experts suggest that Starford Automotive should accelerate the industrialization of AMT products.

Foreign capital seizes China's automatic transmission market

At present, in the manual transmission market, self-owned brand products have already dominated, but in the technical field of higher-level automatic transmissions, especially in automatic transmission control technology, imported products still dominate the market. Failure to master the core technology of automatic transmission has become a bottleneck restricting the development of China's automatic transmission industry.

Driven by the rapidly growing market demand, foreign manufacturers are rushing to layout China. It is understood that the Italian Marelli Group, the United States Eaton Corporation, the German ZF Group and other international transmission companies have put their products into the Chinese market. Continental developed a set of "Oriental" platform transmission control unit. The control unit is an electronic platform using a 32-bit microprocessor, which can be used for CVT (continuously variable transmission), DCT (dual-clutch transmission), and AMT (hand-held) All-in-one transmissions, AT (automatic transmission), and other automatic transmissions perform monitoring and control. It is understood that at present, German Continental Group's automatic transmission control unit (TCU) produced in China has accumulated more than one million sets.

During the 2011 Shanghai International Auto Show, the United States WABCO Automotive Control Systems demonstrated a new generation of modular mechanical transmission automatic control systems. According to Yin Zhiyu, Division Manager of Drive Control Systems at WABCO Automotive (China) Co., Ltd., the system adopts a modular design and uses more standardized components to achieve better cost, easier maintenance and higher reliability. Modular design method greatly shortens the product development and market introduction cycle. According to the adaptive development of China's vehicles and road conditions, it can quickly respond to Chinese customers' application requirements for AMT.

Electronic control technology bottleneck restricts independent research and development

At present, almost all the core technologies of automotive automatic transmissions are in the hands of foreign parts suppliers and various development companies. Only independent innovation can break foreign monopolies, and it can truly allow auto parts brand companies to have room for growth.

An expert from the automotive division of the Continental Group in Germany described the transmission control system as the soul of the car. He believes that, in a sense, the control unit constitutes the most important part of the automatic transmission.

According to some enterprises engaged in the research and development of automotive electronic control systems, the technical difficulties that really restrict China's automatic transmission production are the lack of TCU automatic transmission control unit technology. Liu Wei, director of the Technical Development Center of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, believes that even though AMT only installed a set of electronic control systems on the basis of ordinary manual transmissions, replacing the manpower with a computer to perform shift operations, the hardest part of AMT is electronic control. System development.

The reporter learned that to make AMT achieve a precise and comfortable shifting process, a high-precision TCU control unit is needed, and the core technology of TCU is only in the hands of a few large foreign companies. Due to the technical blockade, domestic TCU companies can only independently develop and seek breakthroughs.

Gao Hesheng, deputy director of China Automotive Technology and Research Center, believes that technological innovation in the field of transmission is the key to the development of automotive companies. The development of transmission will affect the competitive landscape of the entire vehicle. Self-branded automatic transmissions can adopt various cooperative channels to accelerate the pace of industrialization, but the core technology of transmissions must ultimately rely on independent innovation.

A technical expert engaged in the development of transmission told the reporter that AMT's electronic control system has high requirements on the reliability and durability of electronic components. In addition to carrying out bench tests, it is also necessary to mount the transmission on the vehicle, through complicated road conditions, etc. Test to test the maturity of the product. Enterprises must have a certain amount of accumulation in order to develop a qualified automatic transmission. The breakthrough of automatic transmission control technology by self-owned brand companies such as Haiboruide and Starford indicated that China's automatic transmission technology has passed the lead-in period and is beginning to move toward mass production.
